The Buckhorn Museum

Looking for the full Texas experience? Look no further than the Buckhorn Saloon & Museum and the Texas Ranger Museum in downtown San Antonio.

The Buckhorn Museum houses one of the most extensive exotic animal collections in the world, with fish from the seven seas, animals from every continent, and unique exhibits that have been collected over 100 years.

One of the biggest attractions in downtown San Antonio, the Buckhorn is anchored in Texas history since 1881 and is a must-see for locals and tourists alike.

The Texas Ranger Museum

The Texas Ranger Museum

In 1936, during the Texas Centennial celebration, a group of Former Texas Rangers came together to build the Memorial Hall — a tribute to the men and women who served as Texas Rangers. The Former Texas Rangers Association dedicated this hall to preserving the legacy of the Rangers and sharing their incredible story with the public.

The museum features exhibits on some of the most notable Texas Rangers in history, including Captain Manuel T. "Lone Wolf" Gonzaullas, Frank Hamer — the Ranger who tracked down Bonnie and Clyde — as well as Rangers Martinez, Jackson, and Armstrong. Their stories of courage and justice are brought to life through authentic artifacts, photographs, and interactive displays.

Private Events

The Texas Ranger Museum also features over 7,000 square feet of private event space, accommodating groups from 20 to 140 guests. Learn more about hosting your event here.

How It All Started

In 1881, at the age of 17, Albert Friedrich opened a saloon at the Southern Hotel on Dolorosa Street in San Antonio. To attract customers from the cattle trail, Albert offered a free beer or whiskey to anyone who brought in a set of deer antlers — and the collection began.

During Prohibition, the Buckhorn survived by serving non-alcoholic drinks and showcasing its growing collection of horns, antlers, and curiosities. Albert traded rattlesnake rattles, arrowheads, and other oddities for drinks, building one of the most unique collections in the world.

Albert's wife Emilie was instrumental in growing the business, managing the day-to-day operations while Albert focused on expanding the collection. Together they turned a small frontier saloon into a Texas institution.

In 1956, the Buckhorn moved to the Lone Star Brewery, where the collection continued to grow and attract visitors from around the world. The museum became a beloved San Antonio landmark and a must-see tourist destination.

In 1996, Mary Friedrich Rogers — Albert's granddaughter — along with her family, moved the museum to its current location at 318 E. Houston Street in downtown San Antonio, just steps from the Riverwalk. The addition of the Texas Ranger Museum brought two of Texas's most storied traditions together under one roof.
